Klingenberg Castle (Homburg)

Klingenberg Castle, an imposing complex in Homburg, Canton Thurgau, is perched at an altitude of approximately 541 meters above sea level. It is a historic structure whose origins date back to the 13th century and which has experienced a turbulent history of destruction, reconstruction, and transformation.
History+
The history of Klingenberg Castle begins in the 13th century with a fortification on the castle hill, the ancestral seat of the ministerial family of Klingenberg. These influential servants of the Habsburgs, including Heinrich II, Chancellor of Rudolf of Habsburg and later Bishop of Constance, shaped the region. After the extinction of the Klingenbergs, the lordship passed through inheritance to various noble families, including those of Breitenlandenberg, Peyer, and von Heidenheim. During the Old Zurich War, the castle burned down in 1444 but was rebuilt two years later. In the 17th century, the abbot of Muri Monastery acquired the property. Several fires in the late 17th and 18th centuries led to repeated destructions and alterations, eventually resulting in today's baroque three-wing complex. After secularization in the 19th century, the castle was privatized. In 1901, the Santo family acquired the property and began extensive restoration work. Further restorations under monument protection took place between 1960 and 1980, and since 2005, the castle has again been in private ownership, with continuous renovations being carried out.
