Kösching Castle

The town of Kösching came into the sphere of influence of the Wittelsbachs through the guardianship of the Imperial Abbey of Niedermünster in Regensburg; the castle, however, which probably dates back to the year 100, was at that time, together with the forest, still under the rule of the Counts of Hirschberg. It was not until 1293 that the Wittelsbachs succeeded in inheriting the castle, which became the seat of a ducal administrator (Pfleger), who was usually also a judge and forest master; the Pfleggericht (administrative and judicial district) of Kösching is first mentioned in 1329. Due to financial difficulties, the Wittelsbachs had to repeatedly pledge the castle and lordship of Kösching in the 14th and 15th centuries. Louis the Bearded of Bavaria-Ingolstadt surrounded Kösching with a rampart and moat in 1420. At this time, the Pfleggericht of Kösching had its greatest extent: besides Kösching with Desching, the six mills and Hellmannsberg, it included half of the village of Kasing, the villages of Appertshofen, Westerhofen, Zandt, Schönbrunn (after 1475) and the Kösching Forest. From 1749, only a temporary administrator (Pflegverweser) resided in Kösching Castle, from 1756 Kösching was entirely co-administered from Ingolstadt, and in 1803 the Pfleggericht of Kösching was finally completely dissolved and incorporated into the Landgericht (district court) of Ingolstadt. At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was sold by the state to private owners and largely demolished due to dilapidation. In 1853, the district of Ingolstadt bought it and established a hospital there. Since the construction of the new district hospital in 1969, the castle building has been used as staff accommodation.
