The castle was built between 1689 and 1704 under Heinrich XXIV von Reuß as a four-wing complex on the walls of an old 13th-century castle of the bailiffs of Gera. In 1804, Heinrich XLIII von Reuß added a castle park in the Elster floodplains in the style of English landscape gardens.
