Kogl Castle

The origins of the Kogl dominion date back to the Middle Ages. In 1581, the property came into the possession of Hans Freiherr von Khevenhüller. As the old castle no longer met contemporary demands, Franz Ferdinand Graf Khevenhüller commissioned the Linz master builder Johann Michael Prunner around 1710 to plan a new castle at the foot of the Koglberg. In 1810, when the Innviertel briefly belonged to Bavaria, Counts Anton and Josef Khevenhüller sold their Upper Austrian properties, including Kogl Castle, to the Viennese court advocate Andreas Pausinger. In 1861, Freiherr Mayr von Melnhof acquired the estate, which in 1884 passed as a wedding gift to his daughter Theodora and Count Adalbert von Kottulinsky. In 1936, Baron Friedrich Mayr von Melnhof, the nephew of Countess Kottulinsky, inherited a part of the castle, which from 1943 until the end of the war was occupied by the NS-Sonderstab Rosenberg. After 1945, it served as a residence for an American army corps general. Since 1956, Kogl Castle has once again been owned by the Mayr-Melnhof family.
