Kohfidisch Castle
Kohfidisch Castle is located in Kohfidisch in Burgenland and is situated at the southern end of the village in an extensive English garden with rare old trees. It has been owned by the Erdődy family since the 16th century. Initially a manor farm, it was expanded into a castle in the 17th century, and in 1780, it was probably extended by the architect Franz Anton Hillebrandt. In the early 19th century, the castle was further expanded. In 1945, the castle was slightly damaged during combat. From 1945 to 1949, the Red Army command, Oberwart district, was stationed in the castle. After the command was moved to Oberwart, the castle was sustainably destroyed, primarily by the removal of (building) materials; the valuable furnishings and movable valuables were presumably already stolen by the Red Army and vagrant vandals. In 1975, initial restoration work began, and the roof structure and roof were partially repaired with federal funds. In 1999, further extensive renovation work began. Since 2010, additional parts of the basement (north/west wing, chapel) have been restored and put into operation as a "Heurigen" restaurant and event center.
The castle has three wings and an open courtyard to the east. The main wing and south wing are two-story, while the north wing is single-story. The main wing features an exterior central risalit with a raised tent roof, contains a ballroom, and the garden side is more richly designed as a show facade. The castle chapel has neo-Gothic romantic wall paintings, beneath which several layers of paint were uncovered, dated by employees of the Federal Monuments Office to the late 16th and mid-17th centuries. The original furnishings of the chapel were destroyed but have been re-equipped by the owner family and are available for baptisms, weddings, or private holy masses.
