Kotten Castle (Bösperde)
Haus Kotten is a manor house in Bösperde (city of Menden (Sauerland)). It dates back to a knight's estate from the 13th century. The current building dates from the 17th century and has been a protected monument since March 7, 1983.
The beginnings of the knight's estate Haus Kotten date back to the 13th century. The lower noble family von Kotten is attested until 1383. Afterwards, the house and the associated lands were owned by the family von Werninghaus. In 1590, Caspar von Schwansbell zu Arden inherited the property. In 1623, Arnold von Freisendorf zu Opherdicke became the owner. This was followed by further changes of ownership. Today, Haus Kotten is owned by the family von Gemmingen.

The complex is accessible via an avenue. It consists of the two-story manor house with outbuildings and a tower-like building in the northeast. The current manor house presumably dates from the 17th century. The ground floor is built of quarry stone, the upper floor is half-timbered. Formerly, the complex was protected by moats, of which no traces are visible today. The tower-like building was mistakenly interpreted as a residential tower in the past. In fact, it was originally a fortified granary. It served primarily for storing grain, but in times of war it served as a retreat. The building was still surrounded by moats in the early 19th century and could only be reached by a bridge.
