In the municipality of Paternion in the Villach Land district, Carinthia, Austria, Kreuzen Castle, a Renaissance structure, is situated at an elevation of approximately 870 meters.

History+

The building was originally constructed in the first half of the 16th century as an administrator's house for the local silver, lead, and iron mining industry. In 1591, the Khevenhüller family expanded it into a hunting lodge. The Khevenhüllers were also pioneers in tinplate production, which Barthelmä Khevenhüller introduced in Europe around 1610. Following the expulsion of the Protestant Khevenhüllers during the Counter-Reformation, the estate passed into the possession of the Widmann family. Bear hunting remained significant in the region.
