Kuckuckstein Castle

The first documented mention of Kuckuckstein Castle dates back to 1410, when Günther and Heinrich von Bünau were enfeoffed with it by Landgrave Friedrich the Younger. This occurred after the Dohna Feud, in which the von Bünau family was rewarded for their military services. It is believed that the origins of the complex, which was likely more of a castle, date back to the second half of the 13th century. After its destruction during the Dohna Feud, the castle was rebuilt from 1453 in the style of Arnold von Westfalen. During the Thirty Years' War, specifically in 1643, it was plundered by imperial mercenaries. After more than 200 years in the possession of the von Bünau family, the castle passed to Detlev von Wedelbusch in 1651 and later, in 1694, to Cunno Christoph von Birkholz. Under the Birkholz family, the complex was renovated in the Rococo style.
