In Tamsweg, Kuenburg Castle, an edifice in the Salzburg Lungau region, stands at approximately 1025 meters above sea level. Originally formed from several older houses, the castle now presents itself as a Baroque palace and serves as a center for cultural events.

History+

The origins of today's Kuenburg Castle date back to the 15th century, when wooden houses and masonry buildings already stood on this site. In 1556, Christoph III von Kuenburg, appointed administrator of Moosham, began acquiring estates in the Lungau. The Kuenburg family aimed to establish a center of power here and, through the purchase and conversion of existing houses, formed a first palace by 1598. An inheritance contract later divided the family's possessions into the Kuenburg-Tamsweg and Kuenburg-Neukirchen lines.
