Kynžvart Castle

The castle's origins date back to the late 16th century when the Zedtwitz family had a Renaissance fort built there. In the early 17th century, ownership passed to the Metternich family. Count Philipp Emmerich von Metternich commissioned the conversion of the fort into a Baroque castle between 1681 and 1691. Kynžvart Castle acquired its current appearance under the Austrian Chancellor W. L. Metternich, who had it redesigned between 1821 and 1836 by the Italian master builder Pietro de Nobile in the Viennese Classicism and Empire styles. After the end of World War II in 1945, the property was expropriated.
