Läckö Castle

The Castle can be visited

Läckö Castle, an impressive Baroque complex, is majestically situated on the island of Kållandsö in Lake Vänern, representing an outstanding example of Swedish castle architecture. Located in the municipality of Lidköping in the Västra Götaland region, it tells a rich history of bishops, kings, and influential noble families.

History+

The origins of Läckö Castle date back to 1298, when Bishop Brynolf Algotsson of Skara had a fortress built on this site. The complex was expanded in the 14th century but fell victim to a devastating fire in the late 1470s. Bishop Brynolf Gerlachsson subsequently had a new castle with two corner towers built between 1478 and 1505, whose reconstruction Bishop Vincentius continued before his execution in 1520. Following the failure of the “Lords of Västergötland” uprising and the Reformation, Läckö fell to King Gustav I Vasa in 1527. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, including Svante Sture and Baron Hogenskield Bielke. Läckö experienced a heyday under Count Jakob De la Gardie and his son Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie from 1615 onwards, who transformed the castle into a magnificent Baroque palace and established their own “Läckö School” of artists and craftsmen. In 1681, the castle was confiscated by the Crown as part of the Great Reduction and lost importance in the following centuries until a comprehensive renovation began in the 20th century.
