Laer Castle

West of Meschede is Laer Castle. Originally a medieval lowland castle, it was transformed into a palace in the 17th century and remains an example of Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

History+

The origins of the settlement of Laer date back to the 8th century, with the Wulfeshof first mentioned in a document in 1268. A moated castle was built here in the Middle Ages. After the extinction of the original lords in 1449, ownership changed through inheritance and disputes until Heinrich von Westphalen acquired the property in 1602. Since then, Laer Castle has been owned by the von Westphalen family. In the 18th century, a stone bridge was built over the Ruhr, for the use of which a toll could be charged.
