In the northern part of Landau in Hesse stands Landau Castle, a structure with roots in the 14th century. Originally a castle complex, it was transformed into a palace and served at times as a residence for the Counts of Waldeck.

History+

The origins of Landau Castle date back to the 13th century, when a fortified complex stood on this site. Around 1330, Count Heinrich IV of Waldeck had it converted into a castle. From 1366, his grandson Heinrich VI used the estate as a temporary residence. Between 1397 and 1495, and again from 1550 to 1597, it was the residence of various lines of the Counts of Waldeck. Renovations began in 1549, resulting in parts of the east and north wings, a large stair tower, and a courtyard portal. A Romanesque chapel, later completed in Gothic style and used as a burial site, is now the town church of Landau.
