Langenselbold Castle, in the Main-Kinzig district of Hesse, stands on the grounds of a former Premonstratensian canonry. This complex, built in several phases, is an example of 18th-century architecture.

History+

Between 1722 and 1752, the Counts of Isenburg-Birstein had Langenselbold Castle built. They chose the site of the Premonstratensian canonry of Selbold, which had been dissolved in 1543. The master builder Christian Ludwig Hermann was responsible for the design. The complex consists of six buildings grouped around an inner courtyard. Originally, this courtyard housed a baroque garden with a central fountain, which was later moved to Birstein Castle. On the north side of the ensemble are two two-story buildings with mansard roofs: The older building, dating from 1722, once served as a granary, while the younger one from 1749 was the stately residence.
