Langenstein Castle

Around the year 1100, Reichenau Abbey erected a keep on an elongated rock, which still exists today as a basement. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Langenstein served as the seat of ministeriales of the monastery, who adopted the castle's name. After the Langenstein family died out in the early 14th century, the castle changed hands several times. Between 1570 and 1605, the main building of the current complex was constructed around a square tower. Later, the complex was expanded with the so-called New Castle and connected by an intermediate wing. In 1826, Grand Duke Ludwig of Baden acquired the castle. After his death in 1830, his son Count Ludwig Wilhelm August von Langenstein und Gondelsheim inherited it.
