Laubach Castle

The origins of Laubach Castle date back to 1439, when a first castle complex built by Konrad von Woellwarth was mentioned. He had received the estate from his father Georg IV. von Woellwarth-Reinroden. The line of Woellwarth-Laubach, founded by Konrad and using the castle as its ancestral seat, died out in 1572 with Hans Bartholomäus von Woellwarth-Laubach. Subsequently, the castle was divided between the Notthafft and Bernhausen families. In 1586, the Notthafft sold their share for 6000 guilders to Hans Siegmund von Woellwarth-Fachsenfeld, who later also acquired the Bernhausen's half. It was he who commissioned a new Renaissance-style building in 1599, a four-winged structure with four towers topped with bell domes.
