Laubach Castle

Laubach Castle, in its current form, consists of three horseshoe-shaped, interlocking sections. Of the formerly four fortified round towers, later adorned with baroque domes, three still exist. The castle is used and managed by the Counts of Solms-Laubach as their residence.

A castle with a round keep (gate or clock tower) was integrated into the town's fortifications (municio) in the 13th century. In the 15th/16th century, the town's fortifications were expanded. In 1420, citizens were freed from corvée and taxes, and granted the freedom to build on walls, towers, and moats. In 1475, Count Kuno von Solms received permission from Emperor Frederick II to further fortify the castle and the town of Laubach. The formerly fortified round towers were rebuilt in 1533 by the Licher master builder Wolff Werner.

The complex, expanded into a residence, was completed in 1559 under Friedrich Magnus zu Solms-Laubach, who was the first Solms to take up permanent residence in Laubach, and was further expanded and developed into a castle in the 16th and 18th centuries.
