Lauenau Castle, a moated castle in the municipality of Lauenau, was constructed in the Weser Renaissance style on the foundations of a moated castle from the 12th century.

History+

Around 1190, Duke Henry the Lion had a moated castle built. This served as a border fortification against the Counts of Schaumburg. The first documented mention of the castle occurred in 1307. Ownership changed, often through pawning by the Welfs to castlemen, until it came into the possession of Count Adolf of Schaumburg in 1331. After further conflicts, the castle returned to the Welfs in 1512. During the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud, the complex was besieged by Schaumburg troops and, after the garrison's surrender, destroyed down to its foundations.
