In Altenberg-Lauenstein, Lauenstein Castle is on a steep mountain spur above the Müglitz Valley. Originally built as a border castle, it developed into a regional center and is now a museum.

History+

The exact period of Lauenstein Castle's foundation is unclear; some historians suggest it was built by the Margraves of Meissen around 1200, possibly to protect ore deposits near Freiberg. Other sources attribute its creation to Bohemian nobles, in which case the castle would have served as an outpost for structures in Graupen and Kulm. What is certain is that at the time of its first documented mention in 1289 as “castrum Levensteyn,” the complex was already in the possession of the Margraves of Meissen. It played a role in the colonization of the upper Eastern Ore Mountains and protected settlements as well as trade routes to Bohemia.
