On a rock high above the Rhine Falls in the municipality of Laufen-Uhwiesen stands Laufen Castle, a fortress in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland. It offers a wide view over the Rhine and the waterfall.

History+

The first documented mention of Laufen Castle dates back to 858 AD. It served as the ancestral seat of the Barons of Laufen, whose rule also extended to the vogtei over surrounding communities, while the land ownership was subject to the Bishop of Constance. In 1544, the castle became the property of the city of Zurich, which carried out structural changes between 1544 and 1547.
