Lautereck Castle

Lautereck Water Castle, also known as Teusser Castle, is a water castle in the Teusserbad district of Löwenstein.

The castle stands directly at the Teusser spring below the town of Löwenstein in the upper Sulm valley. The Teusser spring was already known as a holy well in ancient Germanic times and was probably also used by the Romans, as a Roman connecting road between the Limes near Mainhardt and the Roman settlements in the Neckar valley passed directly by the spring. Evidence of its healing power exists from the 16th century. Until the 1930s, Teusserbad was used for spa purposes; Teusser Sprudel has been bottled since the early 20th century.

Count Friedrich Ludwig of Löwenstein had his summer castle built in 1623 in a lake of the spa facilities. About 200 years later, the castle was renovated and "English gardens" were established. In 1835, Teusserbad was to be sold; in a "Description of the Realities," the "so-called Bath Castle" was also mentioned, which contained "11 rooms."

The intricate building now belongs to the owner of Teusser Mineralbrunnen GmbH. On New Year's Day 2009, a smoldering fire in the castle, presumably caused by chimney heat transferring to the ceiling, resulted in one injury.
