Lehrberg Castle is a building located in the municipality of Lehrberg in the Ansbach district of Bavaria. Originally a modest residence, it was transformed into a margravial widow's seat and today characterizes the townscape.

History+

The origins of Lehrberg Castle likely date back to the First Margrave War, when the Lords of Birkenfels, after the destruction of their previous castle, erected a new residence on the outskirts of the village. The exact construction period is unknown, but it was probably a simple building. After the Birkenfels family died out in 1536, the heir Wolf von Wilhermsdorf sold the property in 1540 to Margrave Georg the Pious. In 1542, he granted the estate as a fief to Friedrich von Knobelsdorff, the imperial judge of Nuremberg and governor for the underage son Georg-Friedrich. After Knobelsdorff's childless death in 1553, the fief was confiscated and designated as a widow's residence for margravial consorts.
