Lehrberg Castle

Presumably, already in connection with the destruction of the castle on the hill during the First Margrave War, the Lords of Birkenfels built a residence on the outskirts of the village. However, its exact date of origin is unknown. It must have been a rather modest building.

After the Birkenfels line died out in the male line in 1536, their heir, Wolf von Wilhermsdorf, sold this residence in 1540 to Margrave Georg the Pious (1484-1543), who in 1542 gave it as a fief to Friedrich von Knobelsdorff, the Imperial Land Judge of Nuremberg, whom he had appointed by will as governor and sub-guardian (1544-1548) for his underage son Georg-Friedrich. After his death in 1553 in Zeil am Main (childless), the fief was confiscated and intended as a margravial widow's residence. However, the building was only used after the death of Margrave Georg Friedrich the Elder (1603) by his widow Sophia von Braunschweig-Lüneburg. In this context, the residence was apparently demolished down to its foundations in 1628/29 and a new building in its current form was erected. During the Thirty Years' War, Margravine Sophia had to flee from the imperial troops to the Wülzburg fortress. The village of Lehrberg went up in flames in 1632 - to what extent the residence was affected is unknown.

The building appears quite modest and, with its corner bossage, still points to medieval building tradition. The stair tower placed in the center of the facade bears the (subsequently chiseled) coat of arms of the Birkenfels family above the entrance door: a silver ring on a red escutcheon. The small castle is in great need of renovation and is currently for sale.
