Leimbach Castle
Leimbach Castle is a historic building in the municipality of Leimbach in the Wartburg district and is located in the eastern part of the village. The main building, now used as a residential and commercial building, was the manor house of the former Leimbach estate, whose extensive overall complex has been overbuilt with modern buildings.
Little is known about the history of the castle.
The town of Leimbach was in the Middle Ages the ancestral seat of a noble family, von Leimbach, who are verifiable for the period from 1146-1478. After the extinction of this family, the von Haun family (Bad Salzungen) took over, from whom the property passed to the von Buttlar zu Wildprechtroda.
Architectural Description+
The castle was built as a three-story building using typical local building materials, solid up to the attic, with a plastered facade, roughly hewn corner blocks and jamb stones made of red sandstone. A stair tower on the north side connects the floor levels. This also conceals a round-arched gate to the courtyard. The once steep, tiled roof was replaced during the last general renovation (?). The current roof has bay windows, allowing this floor to be used. The baroque enclosure belonging to the property emphasizes the distinguished character of the house.
