Leipheim Castle

On the western edge of the town of Leipheim in Bavaria stands Leipheim Castle. Its history dates back to the 11th century, with its current appearance shaped by a new construction in the 16th century, which integrated the walls of a predecessor building and thus achieved a height.

The origins of the site date back to 1065, when Gumbrecht von Lipheim presumably had his fortified residence here. The first documented mention of a castle in Leipheim occurred in 1343, initially belonging to the minor noble family of von Güssen. In 1373, the Counts of Württemberg acquired the complex and the town, before it was sold to the Imperial City of Ulm in 1453. Ulm subsequently used the castle as a bailiwick. Construction of the current castle began in 1559, with the reuse of old walls leading to a tall structure with large roof areas and gables. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was plundered and destroyed by imperial troops.
