Leombach Castle

Leombach Castle is located in the Leombach district of the municipality of Sipbachzell in the Wels Land district, Upper Austria. Of the original complex, only a part that has been converted into a residential building and the associated castle chapel remain today.

History+

The earliest mentions of the area around Leombach date back to 791, when a donation by Duke Tassilo III to Kremsmünster Abbey was confirmed by Charlemagne. In 1140, Benedikta von Julbach again transferred her property in Leombach to Kremsmünster Abbey. Leombach was first documented as a castle in 1213 with the mention of Walchun von Leubenbach. In 1360, the complex was enfeoffed to Chunrad Klingenfurtner as a fortress. Later, Eberhard von Wallsee acquired the property and passed it on to Hans Meurl, who was enfeoffed with the moated castle by Kremsmünster Abbey in 1380. A feudal confirmation for the Meurl family took place in 1462.
