Leonstein Castle

The origins of Leonstein Castle date back to 1397, when Wilhelm von Rohr had a fortified manor with a farmyard built on this site. This occurred after his original castle on the local mountain was besieged and destroyed by Duke Albrecht III in 1390. Later owners from the Zelkinger family developed the fortified manor into the valley castle Feichta. In 1629, Count Georg Siegmund von Salburg acquired the castle and the associated lordship from the Zelkinger estate. The Salburg family renovated Feichta in the Baroque style in 1724 and subsequently named it “Neu-Leonstein”. At the end of 1919, the property was acquired by the Upper Austrian provincial government for two million Kronen. After 1920, it became a provincial asset and was assigned to the provincial forest administration.
