Schönbrunn Palace, a former imperial summer residence, is one of Austria's most important cultural assets. The palace and its extensive gardens have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

The history of Schönbrunn dates back to the Middle Ages, when a manor house called Katterburg stood on the site. In 1569, Emperor Maximilian II acquired the property and had a hunting lodge built. The name "Schönbrunn" (beautiful spring) is said to come from a spring discovered here.

The current palace complex was built in the 18th century under Emperor Leopold I and Empress Maria Theresia. The main architects were Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Nicolaus Pacassi.

Schönbrunn Palace is a magnificent example of Baroque architecture. The main building has over 1,441 rooms, many of which are decorated in Rococo style. The famous "Great Gallery" and the "Mirror Room" are particularly impressive.

The palace gardens are an integral part of the Schönbrunn complex and offer a variety of attractions.

The Gloriette, a magnificent colonnade structure, stands on a hill overlooking the palace. It was built in 1775 and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Vienna.

Other highlights include the impressive Neptune Fountain, which depicts scenes from Greek mythology, and the Roman Ruin, an artificial ruin that was intended to evoke a romantic ancient landscape.

The Orangery Garden is one of the largest and oldest orangeries in the world. Exotic plants were cultivated here, especially citrus trees, which were brought into the warm orangery during winter.

The Schönbrunn Zoo, founded in 1752, is the oldest existing zoo in the world and is also located on the palace grounds. It is home to a variety of animal species and is a popular destination for families.
