Leutersdorf Castle

The Old Mint is one of the oldest buildings in the city and a significant example of early 19th-century architecture. Its history is closely linked to the economic development of the region.

From Mint to Administrative Building

The building was constructed in 1828/1829 and originally served as the Royal Mint. Here, coins for the entire kingdom were minted for several decades. With the standardization of currency in the late 19th century, the minting operations were discontinued.

Subsequently, the building was converted and used as an administrative building for various government agencies. During this period, some interior modifications were made, but the exterior facade largely retained its original appearance.

Damage and Reconstruction after World War II

During World War II, the Old Mint suffered significant damage, particularly to its roof structure and the upper floors. After the war, extensive reconstruction measures were necessary. Fortunately, historical plans and photographs were available, which allowed for a largely faithful restoration of the original state.

The Old Mint is characterized by its neoclassical style, which was popular at the time of its construction. The facade is adorned with clear lines and symmetrical elements. Particularly striking are the large arched windows on the ground floor and the decorative cornices that emphasize the different floor levels.

Inside, the building originally housed spacious production halls on the ground floor and offices and residential quarters for the mint master on the upper floors. Today, after various conversions, it primarily contains office spaces.

Today, the Old Mint houses parts of the city administration and is a protected historical monument. It is a popular photo motif and an important landmark that bears witness to the city's rich history.
