Lichtenau was a princely fiefdom in the Middle Ages. Berthold de Lichtenowe, a ministerialis of the Babenbergs, is documented in 1157.

The last of his family was Ludwig von Lichtenau, who is mentioned several times in Zwettl documents between 1283 and 1305.
