Lichtenau Castle

The origins of Lichtenau Castle date back to the early 13th century, when a refuge castle, presumably built around 1217, is attributed to the Rosenbergers. The complex was first documented in 1293 in connection with the death of its owner, Sifrit der Hugenberger. At that time, Lichtenau was a fief of the Rosenbergers. After various changes of ownership, including the Anhanger and Jörger families, the castle came into the possession of the Oeders before 1426. Until 1483, the Wallseers were the feudal lords. Through marriage, the property came into the possession of the Herleinsperger family before 1555, who held it until 1624. Under their aegis, the castle was converted into a fortified Renaissance castle around 1594.
