Lichtenau Castle

The origins of Lichtenau Castle date back to the early 16th century, when it was built between 1503 and 1506 by Wilhelm Rosenberger von Rosenegg, a local industrialist. Its current form as a typical Salzburg noble seat was established in 1624 by Christoph Khuen von Belasy. The property remained with the Khuen von Belasy family until 1663, before passing to Georg Thomas Perger von Emslieb, who held offices in the region at the time. In 1676, Johann Josef Count zu Kuenburg acquired the castle, but sold it in the same year to Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg. The latter had apartments set up. Until 1811, Lichtenau served as a princely administrative and residential building, then briefly came under Bavarian administration, and from 1816 was used by the Imperial and Royal Forestry Administration.
