Lichtenberg Castle, also known as Burg Lichtenberg, stands on a rocky outcrop of the Steinernes Meer, approximately 60 meters above the town of Saalfelden in the Austrian state of Salzburg.

History+

The castle was first documented in 1281. At that time, Archbishop Friedrich II von Walchen transferred the castle to his brothers Alberto and Otto von Walchen after a conflict. By 1287, Archbishop Rudolf reclaimed the complex as an archiepiscopal fief. After Gebhard von Felben withdrew his garrison around 1290, Lichtenberg was occupied by an archiepiscopal administrator. Historians surmise, based on legal disputes between the Bishop of Chiemsee and the Archbishop of Salzburg, that the castle was built before 1228 under the Counts of Plain. From here, the Saalfelden-Lichtenberg administrative district was managed.
