Lichtengraben Castle

Lichtengraben Castle stands about 200 meters below the ruins of Painburg in the village of the same name in the cadastral community of Theißing, municipality of Bad St. Leonhard in Lavanttal.

The castle was built in the first half of the 16th century as a replacement for the abandoned Painhof Castle and expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1564, a Peter and an Ehrenreich von Pain are mentioned. From 1711 to 1839, the castle was owned by the Teuffenbach family. Thereafter, frequent changes of ownership occurred.

The castle is a three-story building with an attic floor around an inner courtyard. It is dated 1544. On the main facade in the southeast, the castle has a rusticated portal and above it, in the roof zone, a clock tower. Several marble reliefs are immured in the building; in the arcaded courtyard, among others, mermaids, and in the entrance, a relief of two men with daggers holding a cattle head. The staircase in the courtyard was only added in 1920. In the northeast corner of the first floor is the former chapel with narrow round-arched windows.
