Lichtenhaag Castle

Lichtenhaag Castle is a castle located in Lichtenhaag, in the municipality of Gerzen in the Lower Bavarian district of Landshut. It is situated on the height of the spur ridge just west of the confluence of the Große Vils and Kleine Vils rivers. It is a four-winged complex around a small inner courtyard. To the west is a stately residential building. The other wings are lower, the northern one has a stepped gable. The late medieval complex was expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. The entrance portal and dome tower are Baroque with furnishings.

Around 1305, the nobles of Leberskirchen moved their seat from their ancestral estate Leberskirchen to Lichtenhaag. In 1506, the seat of Lichtenhaag and other Hofmarken in the possession of the Leberskircher were confirmed. With the extinction of the Leberskircher in 1521, the three Hofmark villages of Lichtenhaag, Leberskirchen, and Vilssattling, with the seat in Lichtenhaag, passed to the administrator of Biburg. In 1762, the Count of Seyboldsdorf acquired Lichtenhaag and other places, but the Hofmark jurisdiction remained. The patrimonial court in Lichtenhaag was only abolished in 1849.

In the 1990s, Lichtenhaag Castle was extensively renovated, among others, by the former mayor of Freising, Adolf Schäfer.
