Lichtenstein Castle, a Renaissance castle, rises above the eponymous Saxon town. Its location on a spur makes it a structure in the Zwickau region.

History+

The first mention of Lichtenstein Castle, then referred to as “Castrum Lichtenstein,” dates back to 1212, although this date is disputed. The Lords of Schönburg are considered the confirmed earliest owners of the estate, which was still called a castle in 1286. The original castle complex was single-story and featured wooden battlements and a watchtower. Later, the defensive structure was reinforced with ashlar masonry made of porphyry. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle suffered severe damage on August 18, 1632, by imperial troops.
