Liebegg Castle

The origins of Liebegg Castle date back to the 12th century, when a branch of the Lords of Trostburg established a new ancestral seat. The Lords of Liebegg, first mentioned in 1241, were ministeriales of the Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg and later of the main Habsburg line. In the late 13th century, the original complex was replaced by a “new castle.” The Liebegg dominion included Gränichen, Schöftland Castle, and other rights. After the Liebegg family died out in 1433, ownership passed to the Lords of Luternau. In 1596, Augustin von Luternau briefly sold the castle to the city of Brugg but repurchased it shortly thereafter.
