Liebeneck Castle

The origins of Liebeneck Castle date back to around 1590, when it was built for the Lords of Liebenstein. At that time, it was known as “Grauborn” and comprised a fortified house and agricultural outbuildings. The Lords of Liebenstein relocated their main residence from Liebenstein Castle here, as Liebeneck was more modern and strategically better located. After the Liebenstein family died out in 1637, the fief passed to the Barons of Waldenburg. Later, in 1793, it was granted to Georg Ernst Ludwig von Preuschen von und zu Liebenstein. With the Imperial Deputation Act in 1806, the imperial fief was dissolved and incorporated into the newly created Duchy of Nassau. The von Preuschen family retained the castle, using it as a summer residence from 1831.
