Lieberose Castle

The four-winged Baroque castle, built around 1750, formerly owned by the Schulenburg family, emerged from a 14th-century moated castle and was partially destroyed during combat with the Red Army at the end of World War II. The remainder of the damaged castle wing was demolished to obtain building materials for "new farmers" – a practice soon abandoned due to immense costs and hardly usable material. The castle tower collapsed in 1975 due to dilapidation. As the castle was built on marshy ground using oak piles and the groundwater level dropped due to the open-cast coal mining in the area, the oak piles suffered so severely that they could no longer support the weight of the tower. Additionally, the demolished castle wing, which no longer supported the freestanding tower, was missing.
