In Kobern-Gondorf on the Moselle stands Liebieg Castle, also known as Niederburg. Originally a medieval castle, it was transformed into a Neo-Gothic country estate in the 19th century and later expanded with a Neo-Romanesque addition. Today, it is a protected cultural monument and a venue for cultural events.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, when Knight Marsilius von Gondorf presumably had a castle built between 1255 and 1272. Ownership changed hands, including the Muhl von Ulmen family and the Lords of Hees. After nationalization by the French administration, the complex came into private ownership and was rebuilt by Johann Peter Clemens into a Neo-Gothic country estate in 1859/60. Around 1900, the von Liebieg family acquired the property and added a Neo-Romanesque extension, giving the castle its current name.
