South of Maria Enzersdorf in Lower Austria is Liechtenstein Castle, a neoclassical palace complex. It is known for its largely reconstructed facade and now serves as a senior residence.

History+

The site of the present-day castle was originally home to a manor house, which was destroyed in 1683 and rebuilt from 1686 onwards. Between 1820 and 1821, Prince Johann I of Liechtenstein had the castle constructed as a summer residence. Architects Joseph Kornhäusel and Joseph Franz Engel oversaw the construction, with the facade modeled after Weilburg Castle. The castle was designated a historical monument as early as 1939.
