Liselund Castle
Liselund Palace, a charming neoclassical country house, is nestled within an extensive English landscape garden near the impressive chalk cliffs of Møns Klint in Denmark. It is a unique example of the era's appreciation for nature and rural idyll, and today serves as an external branch of the Danish National Museum on the island of Møn.
History+
The history of Liselund begins with the medieval estate of Sømarkegaard, which was sold by the Danish state in 1783 to Chamberlain Antoine de la Calmette. Calmette immediately renamed the estate Liselund after his wife, Anna Catharine Elisabeth Iselin, known as Lisa. Inspired by travels to France and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's ideas on nature connection, Calmette spent eight years designing the park before having the current country house built. Part of the park, including artificial ruins and a waterfall, was lost in 1905 due to a cliff collapse. After the death of the last Calmette generation in 1843, Liselund passed into the possession of the noble Rosenkrantz family. In 1938, the estate and its park were transferred to a foundation and made accessible to the public.
