Lobeda Castle

The predecessor of today's castle probably only emerged around 1480, when Duke Wilhelm of Saxony enfeoffed Friedrich von Lunderstedt, the former mountain and city court clerk of Schneeberg, with this property. He built a free court with three main buildings and an inner courtyard. In the following centuries, the owners changed frequently. In 1868, Friedrich Knorr established a brewery, which the Busch family continued from 1892 until 1912. The castle increasingly fell into disrepair. In 1912, Pastor Nonne bought the complex and began a renovation. In 1922, it passed into the possession of the German National Commercial Assistants' Association and was expanded into a retirement home and youth castle. Since then, the extensions (boarding school building from 1928 and lecture building from 1934) have been striking. During the Third Reich, the complex was converted into various Nazi schools. After 1945, it housed a trade union school for occupational safety. Between 1992 and 1995, a renovation took place. After another school episode (EURO-Schulen Jena) until 2005, the castle was auctioned in 2011. Since 2012, the conversion into a residential complex has been underway.
