Löwenstein Castle

The history of the current Löwenstein Castle began when Prince Dominik Marquard zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort acquired the lordship of Kleinheubach in 1721. This included the older Georgenburg, which had been built by Georg Count of Erbach in the late 16th century. The lordship of Kleinheubach had previously passed to the Erbach family through the marriage of Margarethe, Countess of Erbach, to the last Count Philipp von Rieneck. Between 1721 and 1732, Prince Dominik Marquard commissioned the construction of the new castle. The designs were by Louis Remy de la Fosse, an architect who had previously worked for Landgrave Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt.
