Lohr Castle

Lohr Castle, also known as Kurmainz Castle, is a listed castle complex in the Lower Franconian town of Lohr am Main in Bavaria.

The foundation stone for Lohr Castle, which was first mentioned in a document in 1389, was laid around 1340 by Count Gerhard V von Rieneck at the northwest corner of the old town of Lohr am Main. Initially, it was only a residential tower based on a Flemish model, which was surrounded by a moat and a ring wall since the late 15th century. Directly nearby were the Bandhaus, Forsthaus, Remise and Kellereigebäude. After the death of the last Rieneck Count Philipp III, the Electors of Mainz took over the building as sovereigns in 1559 and gradually gave it its present form. It became the seat of the Elector's chief officials. The best-known chief official was Philipp Christoph von und zu Erthal, who used the castle as his official and family residence from the start of his service in 1719 until his death in 1748. At the end of 1739, the Erthals, the father with all his children, moved from Lohr to Mainz to the Erthaler Hof.
