In the village of Loppem, part of the municipality of Zedelgem in West Flanders, Belgium, stands Loppem Castle, a neo-Gothic structure. It is characterized by its stylistic unity, encompassing both its architecture and interior design, which has been preserved in its original form to this day.

History+

The origins of the current Loppem Castle date back to 1856, when Baron Charles van Caloen and his wife Savina de Gourcy Serainchamps commissioned the English architect Edward Welby Pugin for its design. In collaboration with the Belgian architect Jean-Baptiste Bethune, the castle was constructed between 1859 and 1862. The associated park, whose ownership passed to Pierre Clément de Potter sen. in 1756, was transformed around 1800 by his son Pieree Clément jun. into a garden with Chinese elements. Later, in 1873, Baron Charles van Caloen's sons, Albert and Ernest, designed the current park with ponds, caves, and a 2000 m² labyrinth.
