Lübbenau Castle

The origins of the current castle trace back to a medieval moated castle, which was transformed into a Renaissance castle around 1600. The estate acquired its present neoclassical form mainly between 1817 and 1820 by Carl August Benjamin Siegel, with the two towers at the rear added later in 1839 by Homann. The Counts of Lynar family, whose ancestor Rochus Guerrini Graf zu Lynar arrived in Germany in 1568, shaped the castle's history. Elisabeth, the widow of Count Johann Casimir zu Lynar, acquired the Lübbenau lordship in 1621, which remained in the family's possession for over 300 years. The nine-hectare English landscape park was laid out from 1820 according to plans by Peter Joseph Lenné. After the incorporation of the Lübbenau Castle estate into the town of Lübbenau in 1928 and the relocation of the comital residence to Seese in 1930, a museum was opened in the castle in 1932. During World War II, the castle served as a cartographic institution and later as a field hospital.
