Lüntenbeck Castle

The Haus Lüntenbeck, known as Schloss Lüntenbeck, is a former moated castle or fortified house in Wuppertal. It was one of the twelve knightly estates in the Solingen district and, with its largely unchanged complex, is now one of the oldest buildings in the city.

The castle is located in the west of the city, about seven kilometers west of the center of Elberfeld, and belongs to the Vohwinkel district. The complex is surrounded by a forest, the Tescher Busch, and three ponds.

The knight's seat was first mentioned in a document as early as 1217 as a court of the Gerresheim convent; the strong cellar vault of the current manor house probably dates from this period.

The mill tower and the eastern half-timbered house (presumably built as an administration building) were built after the Thirty Years' War and, like the two-and-a-half-story main building with an attached tower, date from the High Baroque period. The building was surrounded by an extensive outer bailey with its farm buildings.

After 1784, Johannes Plücker acquired the castle from Baron von (dem) Bottlenberg. After Johannes Plücker's death, Schloss Lüntenbeck became the property of his son-in-law, the Royal Prussian Consistorial and Government Councilor Karl Ludwig Pithan. Pithan's grandson, Consul Karl Pithan-Hülsenbeck, then sold Schloss Lüntenbeck in 1889 to Gustav Römer. In the 20th century, the city acquired the castle.
