Lützen Castle

Lützen Castle was built by the Merseburg bishops at the end of the 13th century. Since 1928, it has housed the Museum of City and Regional History. The museum commemorates the two battles near Lützen, which were significant in world politics. One is the Battle of Lützen in 1632, in which the legendary Swedish King Gustav II Adolf lost his life. A large diorama with 3,600 tin figures depicts the battle. The other is the Battle of Großgörschen in 1813, which is shown in an even larger diorama (5,500 tin figures). Another exhibition in the museum is dedicated to the poet and writer Johann Gottfried Seume. The building also houses the historical city archive.
