Lully Castle

The exact construction date of Lully Castle is unknown. A plan from 1746 lists Elisabeth von Estavayer, who married into the Praroman family, as its owner. The Estavayer family, whose roots trace back to the 12th century, had several branches, including that of Estavayer-Lully, to which Elisabeth belonged. In 1807, Pierre Francois Marie von Courten acquired the castle; he was born in 1750 and died in 1839. He was the founder of the Fribourg branch of the Courten family and originally hailed from Sierre. After serving as an officer for France and going into exile during the French Revolution, he was appointed Marshal of the Camp in 1816 and elevated to count by Louis XVIII in 1819. In exchange for Lully citizenship, which he received in 1807, he transferred water rights to the municipality. The castle remained in the Courten family until 1914, when Blanche von Rosières-von Courten sold it to a real estate company. Between 1921 and 1936, the castle housed a Carmelite monastery, whose establishment was marked by a complex history involving Sister Saint Michel. After the Carmelites moved out, the castle became a Good Shepherd Institute in 1936, providing accommodation for young women in difficulty. This use ended in 1956 when the castle was converted into apartments. The real estate company founded in 1914 was dissolved in 1988 when Jürg and Ulrich Andres acquired the property.

Lully Castle is located in the village of Lully in the Broye district, canton of Fribourg, Switzerland, at an altitude of approximately 494 m above sea level.

Lully Castle is now privately owned and used as a residential building. The oldest preserved part of the castle is the tower, which once housed a chapel. The chapel originally belonging to the castle was demolished when the building was converted into apartments.
