In Kreischa, Saxony, Lungkwitz Castle emerged from a former moated castle and today is a complex of several buildings grouped around an elongated courtyard. Its history is linked to the founding of a charitable foundation that shaped the castle for centuries.

History+

The origins of Lungkwitz Castle date back to before 1445, when a moated castle was built on this site. Around 1550, the Old Manor House, also known as the Tower Barn, was built, presumably by Hans von Carlowitz or Hans von Zschieren. This building housed stables on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floor. Between 1619 and 1621, Peter von Zschieren had the actual castle building constructed as a Renaissance structure, originally surrounded by moats. It consists of two orthogonally aligned wings connected by a stair tower. In 1724, Dr. Johann Christian Bennemann acquired the estate, and his widow Christiane Bennemann converted it into a foundation in 1760.
